| Justice is Blind? |

09/10/2007 - Yes, McDonnell committed fraud but the cost of his actions have been greatly reduced. In two post-trial rulings Judge Michael Brenner revised his previous judgments and ruled to reduce the jury’s verdict in the Sharpe v. McDonnell case from ~$1.4M ($766K verdict + ~$595K of attorney’s fees) down to a total of ~$310K. Yes that’s correct despite what the jury decided, the judge decided to give McDonnell a million-dollar plus gift. This ruling was quite pleasing to McDonnell as he waved to the judge as he left the court-room and said “have a good retirement”.
It’s strange how you can invest a year and a half of your life seeking justice, spend over $800K in attorney’s fees, collect evidence, give depositions and present your case to a jury. The jury listens for seven weeks, weighs the evidence and deliberates for five days to issue a verdict only to have the judge sweep it away in just a few minutes. Yes, justice is blind, yes McDonnell committed fraud. |
